How do you determine length of Lid Stays?

Q: I have a secretary desk that has a front that flips down to use as a work space, the flap is 24" front to back. What length of flap stays do I need and how do you determine that?

A: You make the length the same as the depth of the desk. In other words, the stay will slide into a pocket in the desk under the flap. You don't want the stays to extend beyond the desk front when the flap is closed. So, the depth of the desk is the maximum length of the stays.
